Ashwini, the star people ask about before a journey

In an ordinary panchang, Ashwini is the first of the twenty-seven lunar mansions. Households ask about it when someone is setting out, or when a treatment is about to begin.

Ashwini sits at the start of the sidereal zodiac, the slice of sky the Moon crosses first after the Lahiri ayanamsha has been applied. A panchang prints it as the opening nakshatra. The presiding pair, in the list every almanac repeats, are the Ashwini Kumaras, the physicians of the old stories. That is why a family planning a short journey, or a first dose, will ask whether the Moon is here.

What the Moon's mansion does not do is decide the journey. A train still leaves when the railway says it leaves. The nakshatra is a traditional filter people lay on top of a day they have already chosen for practical reasons. If the filter and the ticket disagree, Pocket Pandit will say so, and it will not invent a verse that forces one of them.

On a birth chart the same name means something quieter. A person born with the Moon in Ashwini has that as janma nakshatra. It is a coordinate, used later for the Vimshottari periods. It is not a character reference. If someone tells you Ashwini people are always quick to heal, they have left the calculation and started a horoscope column. We do not print those columns.
