Lighting a lamp at home

The evening lamp is a household act. The verse many people say is widely printed. A single chapter-and-verse claim is not made here.

A lamp in the evening is one of the few rites that survives in flats where nobody has time for a full puja. Oil or ghee, a cotton wick, a steady place away from the curtain. The verse that begins shubham karoti kalyānam is what a great many homes say while the flame takes. It is in print in ordinary prayer books. This page does not promote it to a critical edition it has not opened.

You can ask the pandit on this site to recite it. The pandit's mouth is drawn from the syllables, and a general speech engine reads them slowly in a Hindi voice, because there is no Sanskrit voice behind it yet and it does not mark Vedic accents. That is pronunciation help. It is not a claim that the machine has a guru's permission, and it is not a replacement for someone in the house who already knows the line.

If you do not have the verse, light the lamp anyway. The act is older than the app, and it does not require us.
